It was a bitterly cold evening on January 23; temperature was in the single digits and with the wind, it felt like it was sub-zero. When a structure fire broke out in Northeastern El Paso County the call went out to the local fire departments: Peyton and Falcon. After the firefighting crews had been on scene more than an hour and work to extinguish the fire continued, the incident commander made a request for EIS. The wheels now in motion, our volunteers ordered hot food for 25 from Wendy’s in Falcon, prepared hot drinks and hopped in EIS52 to respond.

As you can imagine, with temperatures now dipping below zero, the firefighters were happy to see the arrival of warm food and hot drinks. This night, the hot chocolate was their favorite and thankfully, mop up operations were now underway. Watch crews were assigned to monitor the scene through the night, and EIS made sure they were well supplied, with any extra sandwiches being sent with the department chiefs to feed crews supporting other incidents in the region.
It is the privilege and honor of Emergency Incident Support volunteers to “Serve those who serve”, no matter what the temperature might be.
